Hulu wants to believe in Ryan Coogler's X-Files reboot for a whole season

Hulu believes the truth is out there and is giving Ryan Coogler a season to see what he can find.  The streamer has picked up Coogler’s X-Files reboot to series, assigning stars Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel to a season of paranormal investigations. The series logline should sound familiar to fans of the Fox TV series about odd-couple FBI agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) who investigate unexplained cold cases, with Mulder being the believer and Scully the shrewd skeptic. The new series sees Station Eleven stars Deadwyler and Patel reunite as “two highly decorated but vastly different FBI agents who form an unlikely bond when they are assigned to a long-shuttered division devoted to cases involving unexplained phenomena.”

As far as we know, they will not be playing Mulder and Scully, but new characters. In fact, neither Duchovny nor Anderson know if their characters exist in this new X-Files timeline but will happily take a call with Mr. Coogler, if and when he has a second. Duchovny and Anderson reprised their characters for a revival season a decade ago. More recently, they appeared in a new director’s cut of the 2011 sequel, the eccentrically titled ‌ The X-Files: I Want to Believe – Vrach Frankenshteyn. The new cut premiered on Hulu over the summer to little fanfare, quietly closing the case file on Carter’s control of the series.

The series order comes a few months after Hulu passed on the Chloé Zhao-directed reboot of Buffy The Vampire Slayer. Ironically, both projects were shepherded by Oscar winners, but Sinners‘ success with audiences, critics, and awards voters (it was the most-nominated movie in Oscars history) proved Coogler’s sure hand at mainstream horror. Not to mention, he didn’t get stuck reimagining Joss Whedon’s quippy dialogue for a generation that may find him cringe. A pilot for Coogler’s X-Files was ordered in February, but a series premiere date has yet to be announced.
