Imperfect Women will be down an imperfect woman for season 2

Apple TV officially renewed the psychological thriller Imperfect Women for a second season, with a catch (or two). The first season, based on a book of the same name by Araminta Hall, explored the murder of a woman named Nancy (Kate Mara) and how it affected her two longtime friends, Eleanor (Kerry Washington) and Mary (Elisabeth Moss). As the season unfolded, secrets about the three women emerged and the killer was revealed. Season two will be led by Washington, reprising her role as Eleanor, and will follow an original story by co-showrunners Annie Weisman and Justin Hillian. Elisabeth Moss won’t be returning as Mary, but she’ll be back behind the scenes as an executive producer. As for Mara, there’s no indication that she’ll be involved in the new season, either on-screen or otherwise (yes, her character died, but that’s never stopped a show that wanted to bring an actor back).

“We were thrilled to see how deeply these women and their stories resonated with audiences around the world, and I’m so excited to step back into Eleanor’s shoes,” Washington, who will also serve as an executive producer, said in a statement in the press release. “She’s intelligent and strong, but she also finds herself navigating complicated and sometimes messy situations.  We at Simpson Street along with our incredible partners at Apple and Love & Squalor Pictures can’t wait to explore a fresh chapter for her and share where this story takes us next.”

Season two will also trade the Los Angeles backdrop for the rustic, picturesque setting of Martha’s Vineyard. And with no book to spoil the ending, the story could go just about anywhere (though the first season did depart from the source material in some ways). The official synopsis reads: “In season two, Eleanor (Washington) returns to her hometown roots in the affluent Black enclave of Martha’s Vineyard, only to find that beneath its idyllic surface, lie secrets and scandals that threaten to upend everything she thought she knew about her past.”
