Apple unveils iPhone that folds in half, if that's what you want

In a huge development for people who demand new, innovative ways to putz around on their devices, Apple has announced the iPhone Duo—the phone users can fold in half! Presented by new Apple CEO John Ternus (who replaced Tim Cook after Cook stepped down on September 1), the iPhone Duo was the star attraction at Apple’s “Surprise And Shine” event, which also introduced the Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4, (boasting new, super-shady listening features). The company’s first foldable iPhone is definitely not Apple’s response to Motorola Razr Fold, Google Pixel Fold, or the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold (a.k.a. Spider-Man’s preferred foldable phone), but rather its own exciting new thing. And to show how much Apple is invested in keeping our attention amid such turbulent competition, Ternus also reiterated Apple’s stance on AI, saying the iPhone remains “the best personal device for AI” because of all the intimate knowledge it keeps about its owner—which might be you, lucky consumer!

Among the new bells and whistles on the iPhone Duo, beyond the ability to put a frankfurter in its folded crevasse because you know someone is thinking about doing it, is the ability to conduct your usual iPhone business while the phone remains folded. You can text, receive calls, take photos (the outer display functions as a preview screen when you enable your Camera app), and parse your ceaseless barrage of phone notifications with nary a crack of the Duo. But once cracked, the 7.6-inch continuous screen lets you run two apps at once in split-screen mode. The foldable phone can also fold partway to stare up at you like the pets and/or children you’re supposed to be feeding right now, or like the much cheaper alarm clock you could be using instead. And if you’re a single-image user (and nobody’d blame you if you were), you can use the extra-large screen to watch movies or, as Apple demonstrates in the video below, play some dang video games using your thumbs on the touch screen. Plus, you’ll soon be able to run your Apple Pencil all over the iPhone Duo’s folds, and won’t that be fun?

While the iPhone Duo starts at $1,999, the most expensive model comes to $3,199, or nearly $200 more than a 16-inch MacBook Pro. If you’re wondering how in the heck you’re supposed to afford all this, especially in light of Apple’s newest and most exorbitant prices, don’t worry: Apple recently launched a monthly leasing agreement

You can see the iPhone Duo’s capabilities in the video below.
