It’s Rumor Time: Disney is turning The Tower of Terror into a Guardians Of The Galaxy ride

We’re almost exactly a year away from the arrival of Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2, James Gunn’s follow-up to his massively successful romp through the outer reaches of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We’ve already reported on the standard Chris Pratt set tour and a taunting Nathan Fillion cameo, but now Marvel—and its parent company, Disney—might have an even bigger treat for fans who want to walk in Star Lord’s raccoon crap-stained boots. The theme park-obsessives at Mice Chat—who pepper their posts with hyper-specific jargon abbreviations like “TDA,” “CMs,” and “WDI”—are confirming a rumor that at least one version of the Twilight Zone Tower Of Terror is set to be repurposed as a Guardians Of The Galaxy ride, based on the private vault of Benicio Del Toro’s character, The Collector.

This is apparently all from anonymous accounts from park employees, but Disney has reportedly been testing changes to the Disney’s California Adventures iteration of the ride for a while now, figuring out how to successfully adapt the rapidly moving elevator for its new, Marvel-based branding. It should be noted, though, that Disney higher-ups have denied the rumors; they also recently made headlines by shopping around ideas for a new Tower Of Terror movie, which would be a weird move if they’re planning to radically alter the ride. (To be clear, the version of The Tower Of Terror at Disney’s Florida park would still be staying intact.)

When you think about it, though, The Tower is a great fit for a Guardians Of The Galaxy theme park adaptation: It’s flashy, overwhelming to the senses, and it drags participants upwards and downwards with mechanical roteness, before dropping them off exactly where they started, with a vague sense that something fun just happened. In other words, a perfect encapsulation of the experience of watching the film. Anyway, if this isn’t all just so much Mice Chat, then the repurposed ride is expected to be unveiled next May, during the same week that Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 is set to premiere.
