The Odyssey sets six actors for its Oscar campaign

We can now say definitively that Zendaya will not receive an Oscar—nor a nomination—for her role in The Odyssey. Neither will Charlize Theron, Himesh Patel, Elliot Page, or Lupita Nyong’o. According to Gold Derby, the Christopher Nolan-directed film will run six actors in its Oscar race, and those six actors are: Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Samantha Morton, Robert Pattinson, and John Leguizamo. The biggest reveal here is that Hathaway will officially campaign as a supporting actress, which the outlet reports immediately makes her a front runner in the category. Damon will campaign for Best Actor, while the rest of the actors will campaign in their respective supporting categories.

As Gold Derby points out, The Odyssey could make a run for the Oscar-nomination record that Sinners achieved last year, as the film seems to have a decent shot at being nominated in most design categories. Sinners earned 16 nominations last year, with three of them being acting nominations for Michael B. Jordan, Delroy Lindo, and Wunmi Mosaku. The Odyssey is submitting for 19 awards. Outside of acting, those categories are: picture, director, adapted screenplay, cinematography, film editing, casting, production design, costume design, makeup and hairstyling, original score, original song (for James Blake, Ludwig Göransson, and Travis Scott’s “When I’m Home”), sound, and visual effects.

From where we’re sitting, Hathaway seemed like she had a good shot at being nominated in the leading actress category, where she likely would have competed against Julianne Moore in The Debut and Sandra Hüller in Fatherland and/or Rose. As for the supporting actor category, three actors from the same film earning nominations in the same category hasn’t happened since 1974’s The Godfather Part II, when Robert De Niro took home the award for his performance as Vito Corleone. Gold Derby‘s own odds only include Leguizamo as the nominee in the category, though they suggest Pattinson has a decent shot of getting in the lead actor category for his performance in Primetime. Meanwhile, both Hathaway and Morton are predicted to get nominations.
