It turns out that Zooey Deschanel being identified as a Boston bombing suspect was just a mistake

As with any tragedy, the immediate aftermath is a time of confusion and misinformation: Paranoid theories are concocted, supposed leads flare up and are just as quickly scrapped, and before you know it, Zooey Deschanel is being accused of terrorism. That’s what happened on Dallas-Fort Worth’s Fox affiliate KDFW, anyway, which made the delightfully synergistic yet technically inaccurate mistake of identifying the New Girl star as one of the Boston Marathon bombing suspects last Friday, saying in its closed captioning that a manhunt was currently underway for Deschanel. Of course, as anyone who watches New Girl knows, men are always hunting Zooey Deschanel, only to find her so adorably elusive. So this is not, by definition, news. And also, no, Zooey Deschanel did not plant the homemade bombs in Boston, despite her love of crafts.

Deschanel herself tweeted a screenshot of the error (which was passed along to her by Joel McHale), declaring, “Whoa! Epic closed captioning FAIL!” And while she seemed to take it in stride and also as a 15-year-old boy for some reason, the company behind the slip-up, the Kansas-based Caption Solutions, issued a formal apology all the same, saying both it and the captioner responsible “deeply regret” and “sincerely apologize for this error.” And with that, Alex Jones sighed and deleted an in-progress blog post he’d titled “New Girl Order,” moving on to some other equally asinine insinuation.
