Janelle Monáe transitions from bisexual lighting to a pool full of “Pynk” in the new video off of her upcoming Dirty Computer album. As envisioned by director Emma Westenberg, “Pynk” is a cheeky, kitschy celebration of Black (cis-)female sexuality, with some of the least subtle vaginal imagery this side of a Georgia O’Keeffe painting. (Where does one order a pair of pink silk vagina pants, anyway?) Think Bjork’s “Utopia” video crossed with Lady Gaga’s “Telephone” video.
Starring alongside Monáe in the video is Thor: Ragnarok’s Tessa Thompson, who also appeared in Monáe’s similarly sexy “Make Me Feel” video. The song itself features Grimes, who previously collaborated with Monáe on the song “Venus Fly,” and offers glitchy beats and suggestive lyrics—“Pink / like the tongue that goes down/ Pink / Like the paradise found”—before breaking out with an explosion of guitars at the bridge.
In the official description, Monáe says “Pynk” is “[A] brash celebration of creation. self love. sexuality. and pussy power! PYNK is the color that unites us all, for pink is the color found in the deepest and darkest nooks and crannies of humans everywhere… PYNK is where the future is born….” We’re sure Monáe’s mentor Prince, himself a famous lover of “Pynk,” is looking down from musical heaven with a smile.
