Joey Purp gets arty with “Performance Art Freestyle”

As a member of Chicago’s Save Money crew—which counts Chance The Rapper and Vic Mensa among its ranks—Joey Purp is establishing himself as one of many artists in the crew poised for a breakout (though he still remains the only one to claim The Velvet Underground as his favorite band). While it’s been years since the release of The Purple Tape, his recent tracks—“Run It Up” and “Morgan Freeman”—have seen him take huge leaps since Purple’s release. The A.V. Club is premiering Purp’s latest, “Performance Art Freestyle,” below. Though the track doesn’t crack two minutes, Purp makes the most of every second, blasting out rhymes and references with the precision of a surgical strike. As Purp puts it, “Think of this as less of a song, and more of an audio installation.”
