According to star Keanu Reeves, John Wick, the character, “died.” The character is “dead.” He has ceased to be. He’s expired and gone to meet his maker. He’s a stiff. Bereft of life, he rests in peace. But what does he know? He’s just the face of the franchise. Hollywood has recast and rebooted and resurrected before, and they’ll be damned if a blockbuster like Wick is going to sit on the shelf.

Speaking to ComicBook, Jenefer Brown, EVP and Head of Global Products & Experiences at Lionsgate, confirmed that John Wick: Chapter 5 is in development. Remarking upon the series’ ability to “grow and expand in incredible ways,” Brown laid out all the assassin’s upcoming adventures, including the first spin-off film Ballerina and “more spinoffs to come, a TV series, video game.” But before anyone could ask about a second season of The Continental, Brown said something no one at the High Table wants to hear: “Of course, we’ve announced we’re working on a fifth John Wick film.”

Now, this confirmation does make things awkward for Reeves. Earlier this month, he seemed pretty adamant that he wasn’t returning and that his dapper assassin, who just wanted vengeance for his pupp,y was satisfied in the afterlife.

“There’s a version of it called Ballerina, which is in the John Wick world, and John Wick makes a brief appearance,” he told ExtraTV. “So, other than that, I have no idea. You know, the character’s dead. He died in John Wick: Chapter 4. I know, in Hollywood you can… I know, I know, it’s the Hollywood story. Right now, there isn’t.”

Maybe the story’s changed, or we’ll finally get that Young Wick prequel we’ve been dying for. Either way, the ruthless, coin-wielding assassins of the High Table shouldn’t get too comfortable. Baba Yaga is always on the verge of a comeback.
