One of the most frustrating struggles in Hollywood is that every giant ape has to be gianter and more ape-like than the last one. A man in a suit isn’t going to cut it anymore, especially if that man isn’t at least a couple stories tall. This trend is especially difficult for the King Kong series, which already has to be rebooted every few years when someone like Peter Jackson comes along and decides that the movie needs a three-hour ice skating scene. In fact, with Warner Bros. returning to that world for the upcoming Kong: Skull Island, the studio has had to make its ape bigger than ever—unless you count King Kong Vs. Godzilla, which WB apparently does not.
This comes from The Hollywood Reporter, which quotes Kong director Jordon Vogt-Roberts as saying that his ape is “going to be the biggest Kong there’s ever been,” adding that he won’t be “10 feet or 30 feet, but a 100-foot ape.” That’s a pretty big ape, considering that Kong is usually about 50 feet tall, and it means he could theoretically climb the Empire State Building twice as fast as he normally does. Granted, he’d still get attacked by airplanes, but at least he’d have more time to admire the view of Depression-era New York.
Kong: Skull Island will feature Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, and John C. Reilly craning their necks up a little higher to see the CG ape, and it’ll be in theaters in 2017.
