Melancholia and Nymphomaniac director Lars von Trier has been admitted to a care facility for Parkinson’s disease. Louise Vesth, a producer at his company Zentropa, shared the news on Instagram today, writing (via The Guardian), “Lars is currently associated with a care centre that can provide him with the treatment and care his condition requires.”

“It’s a complement to his own private accommodation. Lars is doing well under the circumstances,” Vesth added, denouncing the “need to pass on very personal information” after media speculation from von Trier’s native Denmark.

Von Trier originally made his diagnosis public in 2022 while promoting his most recent work, limited series The Kingdom: Exodus, at the Venice Film Festival. “That means that I had not lived up to the way I wanted to be as a director, because I was ill. And that’s a pity for the [The Kingdom: Exodus] actors, but I think they did okay,” the director shared with Variety at the time. The Kingdom: Exodus is the final installment of von Trier’s The Kingdom series, which he began in 1994.

When asked if he had any plans for future projects, von Trier answered that he would “take a little break and find out what to do” in the wake of his diagnosis. “But I certainly hope that my condition will be better. It’s a disease you can’t take away; you can work with the symptoms, though,” he continued. “I just have to get used to that I shake and not be shameful in front of people. And then continue because what else should I do?”
