Legend Of Zelda movie delayed "to make the film as good as it can be"

Don't worry—Link only has to wait about a month to save Zelda.

Legend Of Zelda movie delayed

Nintendo fans just got their hands on the Switch 2, but they’re going to have to wait a little while longer for one of the company’s other highly anticipated releases. The Legend Of Zelda movie has been delayed by about a month, according to a post on X from Nintendo representative director and fellow Shigeru Miyamoto. “For production reasons, we are changing the release date of the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda to May 7, 2027,” he wrote. “It will be some weeks later than the release timing we originally announced, and we will take the extra time to make the film as good as it can be. Thank you for your patience.”

The film was originally slated for a March 26, 2027 premiere, as Miyamoto announced earlier this year. The extra few weeks are really just a drop in the bucket, however, considering how long this film has been in development. When Miyamoto first announced the project back in 2023, he claimed that he had already been working on it for “many years now” and that “it will take time until its completion.”

Wes Ball (Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes, The Maze Runner) is directing the feature, which will be produced by Nintendo and Avi Arad’s Arad Productions and distributed by Sony. That’s pretty much all we know so far; casting for beloved characters like Link, Zelda, and even the evil Gannon has not yet been announced.

At least Link abandons some mammoth competitors (literally) with the delay. The next film in the Godzilla X Kong franchise is currently scheduled for a March 26, 2027 release—Zelda’s old window—with fellow video game adaptation Sonic The Hedgehog 4 entering the race the week before, per The Hollywood Reporter. It’s dangerous to go alone, but in this case, it may also be more lucrative.
