Much like the parable of the loaves and fishes, pop star Lorde drew a larger crowd than she could feasibly take care of on Tuesday. That afternoon, she sent a text to fans urging them to “Meet me at the park Tonight 7pm.” New York fans answered the call to action, flocking to Manhattan’s Washington Square Park where she had posted a snippet of her new song the week before. Several hundred people crowded around the park’s central fountain hoping for a glimpse of the singer; The A.V. Club was on the scene to witness fans climbing up trees and rallying chants of “We want Lorde!” But the event that followed had many asking—quite appropriately—”What was that?”
Apparently Lorde didn’t anticipate, um, having lots of fans in New York City? When the scheduled time rolled around, she posted on her Instagram story: “Omg @thepark the cops are shutting us down I am truly Amazed by how many of you showed up !!! But they’re telling me you gotta disperse … I’m so sorry.” Per Rolling Stone, a spokesperson for the Deputy Commissioner of Public Information (DCPI) confirmed that “officers were alerted of an unscheduled event inside of the park” at around 6:47 PM that evening. “A sound and parks permit is required to have a concert in a New York City Park,” the DCPI statement continued. “This individual did not possess either. Organizers of the event were informed they could not perform and they left the location.”
