Nicolas Cage's John Madden sees the future of football in new Madden trailer

David O. Russell’s testy elan for professionally driven figures depicted in garish facsimiles of period clothing and wild hairpieces continues apace in the new trailer for Madden, his sports biopic about legendary coach and sportscaster John Madden. This latest business addresses the dangers of the man’s health-threatening work ethic, charted by an ulcer diagnosis, a professional reassessment, and the firm support of his wife, Virginia (Kathryn Hahn), all presented with the crackling chk-chk-boom you might expect from a David O. Russell trailer (watch out: Dangerous professional at work!). “It’s a sin not to use your gift,” Christian Bale tells Nicolas Cage’s Madden (as former Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis), with that sneer Bale gets whenever he puts on that surly Northeastern American tough-guy affectation he has. Shane Gillis is also present!

And yet, working so hard that you develop an ulcer can eventually have its paydays, as we see with the arrival of John Mulaney as EA founder Trip Hawkins, who, in a Steve Jobs-like black turtleneck number, pitches Madden the future video game franchise that uses his moniker as its brand. “This is it! This is the future!” Mulaney says, as pixelated football guys dance across a digital gridiron. (We’ve seen that future, Trip, and it looks like empty Red Bull cans, cashed bongs, and buffalo wing delivery.) It’s up to Madden to make the game the best it can be, as was the man’s primary ambition in everything he took on.

Madden hits select theaters on November 11, followed by its premiere on Prime Video on November 18. You can watch the trailer below.
