Mamoru Hosoda, the Academy Award-nominated director of Belle and The Girl Who Lept Through Time, is back. His new movie, Scarlet, the story of a sword-wielding princess who transcends space and time, is heading to theaters this December. Very little is known about the film, but Hosoda has said that, like Belle, it draws inspiration from a “world-famous work on par with Beauty And The Beast.” He also described Scarlet as a buddy road movie about two very different characters who must work together. However, the real ambition of the project appears to be in its visuals. Hosoda has said that the movie will have a unique style: neither 2D animation nor “Hollywood-style CGI.” The film, co-financed by Sony, Studio Chizu, and Nippon TV, will be distributed by Sony around the world, except in Japan, where Toho is releasing the movie. Speaking of Toho, the studio released a Japanese teaser trailer for the film, and Hosoda does not lie. This thing looks wild.
