Marvel is being very thorough in its ongoing search for a Black Widow director

On Sunday, we reported that Marvel had a relatively small list of female directors it was considering for the long-awaiting, much-requested Black Widow spin-off movie, including Deniz Gamze Erguven, Chloe Zhao, Amma Asante, Maggie Betts, and Angela Robinson. According to Variety reporter Justin Kroll, though, the list is significantly longer than just those five names. On Twitter, he teased that Marvel has met with “more than 65 directors” for Black Widow, adding that Marvel Studios is being “extremely thorough on this one.”

He doesn’t offer any more details, because it’s Twitter and brevity is a whole thing there, but it’s not exactly a hard story to buy. Marvel has a good track record lately of finding the right director to match with the right project, and since fans have been asking for Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow to get a solo movie for nearly a decade, it stands to reason that the studio would be very concerned about making sure it nails this.

Assuming none of those 65 people have officially signed on yet, the Black Widow movie is probably pretty far off. We wouldn’t know, though, because Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige refuses to announce any more movies until Avengers 4 comes out next year (also, announcing more movies would still count as a spoiler for Infinity War, so maybe it’s for the best that he keeps things under wraps for a while).
