Teasing fans about a possible return of The West Wing has become a recurring game for some of the show’s original creative team these days, including series creator Aaron Sorkin and star Bradley Whitford. But even Whitford—who The A.V. Club talked to on Thursday night, as he geared up to star in a new production of the stage version of Sorkin’s earlier A Few Good Men—says there’s some “wise reticence” about messing with the show’s seven-season run of successes.

Even as he half-joked about asking whether Sorkin—who talked up the possibility of getting back into a White House mood while doing the press rounds for The Social Reckoning—”had said anything,” about bringing the show back, Whitford said that, “There is a very wise reticence to take something that was such a singular, wonderful experience, and try to recreate it. I think we’re all kind of leery of that.”

None of which has apparently dampened Whitford’s enthusiasm for the potential of a return, mind you. “I can tell you,” said Whitford, who presumably keeps in touch with West Wing cast scuttlebutt through projects like The Diplomat, where he co-stars with Allison Janney, “We’d all be there, if Aaron came up with something.” He also reflected, as Sorkin has, on just how strange it would be to see The West Wing—about as pure a product of Clinton-era, “end of history” political wishmaking as you could ever hope to watch—being subjected to our modern political reality. “It’s a different world,” Whitford noted, before letting his TV-making brain start to spin up, speculating (not for the first time) that a limited series could be a potential fit for a return. (Meanwhile, as viewers of the show, we’ll take however many episodes it takes Sorkin to unravel that hyper-annoying “Toby leaked a secret space plane” plotline from late in the show’s post-Sorkin seasons; that’d be worth the price of admission all on its own.)
