Mat Kerekes searches for “Direction” in his new video
As the singer of Citizen, Mat Kerekes is no stranger to throwing curveballs. The band started out playing bombastic pop-punk, but it slowly shifted away from that, moving into moodier alt-rock territory as time went on. For his upcoming solo album, Luna & The Wild Blue Everything, Kerekes moves even further away from the sound he was originally known for, crafting a record that deals in dark, folky storytelling. The A.V. Club is premiering the video for “Direction,” which sees Kerekes’ Citizen bandmate Ryland Oehlers going full Morrissey and dancing around while undressing. It’s a simple video, but it fits the song well as Kerekes pounds on an acoustic guitar against a swinging drumbeat. In the song’s bridge he’s joined by Anthony Green of Circa Survive and Saosin, and as Kerekes says about Green’s presence, “This was an old demo that I’ve had for a while that I decided to use last minute. I’ve always been a big Anthony Green fan so having him sing on this one was pretty cool.”
Luna & The Wild Blue Everything is out next week and pre-orders are available now.
