After many, many years in development, Michael B. Jordan’s remake of The Thomas Crown Affair reportedly entered production on Monday. In celebration there’s a bunch of high-profile casting news coming out about the film, which Jordan is directing, producing, and starring in as the titular wealthy art thief. He’ll be joined by the previously cast Taylor Russell, as well as Lily Gladstone, Kenneth Branagh, and Danai Gurira.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Oscar nominee Gladstone and Oscar winner Branagh’s roles are being kept under wraps. (It’s fun to see an established actor-director like Branagh supporting an actor-director on the rise like Jordan.) Russell is playing “the suave private detective” on Thomas Crown’s trail (and his love interest, we can assume from previous iterations of the role). Gurira, who previously co-starred with Jordan in Black Panther, will play Crown’s “confidante.” Sources for the outlet claim “the action is taking place in Europe, while still keeping the art-thieving theme.”
The first Thomas Crown Affair came out in 1968, directed by Norman Jewison and starring Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway. A remake directed by John McTiernan and starring Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo was released in 1999. Both movies were a success for their time. Per a Vulture profile earlier this year, the Sinners star has been developing his take for more than a decade. (“I wasn’t old enough to play that dude” when the opportunity first came to him, the 38-year-old told the outlet, but now “I’m at the right time.”) The latest take on the art heist romantic thriller is written by Drew Pearce (The Fall Guy, Hotel Artemis) after a previous draft that was written by Wes Tooke and Justin Britt-Gibson, which was based on the original film, per THR. The movie is slated for release from Amazon MGM on March 5, 2027.
