Marvel won't let Michael Douglas die

If Michael Douglas had his way, he would have appeared only in the first two Ant-Man movies and called it a day. During a recent appearance on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, Douglas was asked point-blank whether he’d asked to be killed off in the last Ant-Man film. “I would have been killed off after the second one, but they wouldn’t let me,” Douglas replied. The actor explained that after becoming cancer-free and playing Liberace in Behind The Candelabra, he took stock of the kinds of projects he hadn’t yet tackled and what interested him. He pursued comedy with The Kominsky Method, then realized he’d never worked on a green-screen movie. “I told my agents, ‘I’d like to do one of these green screen movies to see what they’re like,’ you know? Because it’s amazing. It’s nothing, just a green screen and they show you the pictures of what it’s gonna look like when it’s all finished,” Douglas said. “It’s hard acting, man.”

Douglas made his Marvel debut as Dr. Hank Pym, the physicist and creator of the Ant-Man suit before Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang took over, in 2015’s Ant-Man. “So we did Ant-Man, Paul Rudd was a wonderful actor, a lovely group,” Douglas recalled. “But then you can’t get out of it.” Marvel summoned Douglas again for Ant-Man And The Wasp, Avengers: Endgame, and Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania. So far, Rudd and Kathryn Newton (Cassie Lang) are the only members of the Ant-Man crew confirmed to reprise their roles for Avengers: Doomsday. But in a universe where a character death isn’t always the end of the road for an actor, Douglas may never truly be free of the Marvel machine.
