Prime Video officially invites Mike Flanagan's Carrie to the prom

Poor Carrie White. The telekinetic protagonist of Stephen King’s 1974 novel has already had pig’s blood dumped on her three times on film, a handful more both on and off Broadway, and countless others in the myriad of scenes she inspired, in everything from Derry Girls to Riverdale. Someone needs to put an end to this torture once and for all, but it won’t be Mike Flanagan or Prime Video. The streamer just greenlit the Haunting Of Hill House director’s “reimagined” Carrie series, officially adding yet another King adaptation to the auteur’s very full, very spooky plate.

Per Deadline, Flanagan will serve as the series’ writer, executive producer, and showrunner, in addition to directing select episodes. If you thought you’d already heard about this, don’t worry—you’re not developing mysterious powers of your own. Development of the series was originally announced back in October, with the project coming together “quickly,” according to the trade. Flanagan reportedly opened a writers’ room last fall, and has been casting on the D.L. over the past few months. As of this writing, Siena Agudong (Resident Evil) is set as Carrie’s nemesis, Sue Snell, while Summer H. Howell (Hunter Hunter) is in negotiations for the titular role. If everything goes according to plan, Howell will join a legacy of humiliated prom queens including Sissy Spacek in Brian De Palma’s original 1976 adaptation and Chloë Grace Moretz in Kimberly Peirce’s 2013 remake.

Hopefully Flanagan won’t turn into a King antagonist himself while trying to juggle all the projects he has in the hopper. He’s also currently tackling the horror master’s Dark Tower series for Prime Video, as well as an Exorcist sequel for Blumhouse and Clayface (yes, that’s still happening) for DC. Someone please remind him that all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy before something drastic happens.
