Mike Flanagan will be scaring the hell out of Amazon MGM for years to come

Mike Flanagan will be scaring the hell out of Amazon MGM for years to come

It’s not even prom yet, and Mike Flanagan has signed a new, exclusive overall deal with Amazon MGM Studios to develop and produce original series. Per Deadline, the deal begins with Flanagan’s upcoming reimagining of Carrie, the pig-blood-soaked prom song by Stephen King, based on his breakthrough 1974 novel. Continuing his unofficial series of remakes of ’70s horror classics,  Flanagan is also writing, directing, and producing a new version of The Exorcist, an adaptation of William Peter Blatty’s novel, the 1973 Oscar winner, and a forgotten two-season Fox series.

Flanagan came to Amazon after several years at Netflix, where he enjoyed a slew of hits, including the real estate horror shows The Haunting Of Hill House, The Haunting Of Bly Manor, and The Fall Of The House Of Usher. During that time, he also adapted two Stephen King books, Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep, before things started to change at Netflix. “When we agreed to do The Midnight Club, the entire company was very different,” Flanagan said in 2022 after Midnight Club‘s cancellation. “It’s safe to say that a show like that, which we thought was innovative and harder to classify, requires some pretty robust promotion to get off the ground properly, and Netflix’s strategy for promoting new shows has changed quite a bit.” After escaping Netflix, Flanagan released The Life Of Chuck from his heart and mind in 2025.

When he arrived at Amazon in 2022, the first thing Flanagan did was talk about The Dark Tower, announcing that he acquired the rights and seemed intent on turning Stephen King’s fantasy epic into five seasons of TV and two stand-alone movies. Flanagan described it as “my Holy Grail of a project,” and considering he was “floored” by what Amazon did with Lord Of The Rings, the new deal makes a lot of sense. “More than half of my life, I’ve closed my eyes and been able to watch a lot of this play out, I’ve dreamed about this,” Flanagan said. “That first shot, which comes right off at the first incredible sentence of the first book, The Gunslinger, I’ve had that image just rattling around in my head since I was an undergrad. It’s going to have to get out of there eventually. I really need to get it out of my head.”

With Amazon MGM firmly in tow, Flanagan will likely get The Gunslinger out of his head sooner than later.
