In what is a permanent stance, and in no way a tantrum after being dropped from his record label, Morrissey has announced that, after two shows in London next week, he will never perform in the U.K. again. In a statement on fan site True To You, Moz insists, “There is absolutely no way that we can generate any interest from record labels in the United Kingdom … without new releases, there is no point in additional touring,” reasoning that, without an album of new songs, no one would turn up to hear Morrissey sing old chestnuts like “There Is A Light That Never Goes Out” and “How Soon Is Now?.”
The former Smiths frontman has been on the skids in the U.K. since labels Capitol and Harvest dropped him last year, shortly after releasing World Peace Is None Of Your Business. There’s no word as to whether Morrissey will continue to tour in other countries, but the U.K. has definitely seen the last of him, as he’s known for never changing his mind about whether to perform a concert. The statement is at least gracious towards the fans who will never see him again, saying, “We are obsessively grateful for all interest and loyalty from our audience … Thank you for so many absolutely incredible times. The pleasure and privilege is mine.”
