NBC now crowdsourcing comedy
As announced at NBCUniversal’s Summer Press Day this afternoon, NBC will soon take to the Internet to find a pair of new comedy series—rather than depending on former Must See TV stars to do that. Beginning May 1, the network will be accept pitches at nbccomedyplayground.com, throwing open doors to talent that were previously opened only to former castmembers of Family Ties, The Cosby Show, Will & Grace, and the like. NBC Entertainment President Jennifer Salke told members of the television press that the initiative is seeking people who are “making things, but that haven’t already had something on the air”—so sorry, A Different World’s Kadeem “Dwayne Wayne” Hardison, it looks like this isn’t your year. Entries will be judged by a panel of current Peacock stars, writers, and showrunners, with two winners being chosen to occupy an hour of NBC programming during the summer of 2015, and a third selected to run as a webseries. Salke said episode orders for the winning series may vary, but will exceed no more than six episodes—so if you think you’ve got the new Bent in your head, your chance to get that show made opens up next month.
