For those not blessed with the data processing speed of Johnny Five, “The 10,000 Movies Project” is way too much to take in all at once. Born on YouTube, the project was intended to be pretty much what it sounds like—10,000 full films, all laid out in a grid and playing simultaneously. But apparently that was beyond not only human cognition, but also computer technology, as the creator of the project says that 10,000 feature length films would have taken several months to export. Instead, all we get are the first five minutes of those 10,000 movies. But that’s fine, because the experience is still overwhelming with or without sound. And in a token gesture of deference to our puny simian brains, viewers can zoom in on the films, which range from early talkies to Troma Team productions, until faces, titles, and other recognizable patterns start to emerge.
