Netflix deems 13 Going On 30 old enough for a reboot

Ready to feel old? 13 Going On 30 is going on 22 this year. The beloved Jennifer Garner rom-com, in which a perpetually humiliated 13-year-old girl wishes away the best years of her life and wakes up as a 30-year-old, came out in 2004. More time has passed between today and 13 Going On 30’s release than between 13 Going On 30 and Big. But now that everyone who was 13 when the movie came out is over 30, Netflix has determined it’s time for a 13 Going On 30 reboot.

Per Deadline, 29-year-old Emily Bader will pretend to be a 13-year-old 30-year-old opposite Logan Lerman in Netflix’s reboot. She will reteam with her People We Meet On Vacation director, Brett Haley, who will helm the remake from a script by Hannah Marks and Flora Greeson. The film’s original star, Jennifer Garner, will executive produce.

13 Going on 30 is one of those rare, perfect films,” Haley said in a statement. “Funny, emotional, deeply human, with unforgettable performances from Jennifer Garner, Mark Ruffalo and Judy Greer. I’m a longtime fan, so stepping into this reimagining comes with tremendous responsibility.”

13 Going On 30, along with its inverse, 17 Again, have sustained much of their popularity over the years for several reasons. One, people find them funny and charming. Two, audiences love it when someone old plays someone young and vice versa. Three, they are perfect examples of the types of movies Hollywood rarely makes these days: rom-coms starring young TV stars making the successful leap to movies. Of course, when Hollywood does make them, they’re usually forgettable straight-to-streaming reboots (we’re looking at you, Father Of the Bride), but maybe nearly 25 years later, 13 Going On 30 can still make rom-com dreams come true.
