New Bridgerton prequel will bring Lady Violet and Viscount Edmund's romance to life

Dearest gentle readers, rejoice: The world of Netflix’s Bridgerton is expanding once again. Three years after Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story followed the arrival of the young queen in England and her heart-wrenching romance with King George, it’s Bridgerton matriarch Lady Violet’s turn. An as-yet-untitled new spinoff (but, let’s face it, this thing is going to be named Lady Violet: A Bridgerton Story and we all know it) will follow her relationship with Viscount Edmund Bridgerton, father of the sprawling brood of kids whose stories are the focus of the flagship series.

We learned the details of Edmund’s death in Bridgerton’s second season—it’s why Anthony has such a visceral fear of bees—and his romance with Violet has long been held up as a foundational pillar of the family’s emotional lore. Seeing the two fall in love feels like something that’s been a long time coming, and promises to add more depth to Violet’s journey on the main series, which saw her embark on a romance with Lord Marcus Anderson before deciding to end things to continue exploring who she is on her own at this point in her life, post-marriage, widowhood, and childrearing.

Interestingly, whereas Queen Charlotte was an original story based on the show’s existing characters, Bridgerton author Julia Quinn did write a short story entitled Violet In Bloom about Edmund and Violet’s romance, which appeared in the collection The Bridgertons: Happily Ever After. So, on some level at least, fans already have an idea of what to expect.

Shonda Rhimes will write, executive produce, and showrun the limited series with Nicholas Nardini, who also wrote on Queen Charlotte and Scandal. While Ruth Gemmell plays Violet on the flagship series and Connie Jenkins-Greig played a younger incarnation who hadn’t yet met Edmund on Queen Charlotte, there’s no word yet on whether any of the younger actors will reprise their roles from the previous prequel. (In fact, there’s probably every reason to believe that a recast is coming, if only to age the character up a bit.) But like so much in the Bridgerton world, we’ll have to wait and see.
