Netflix renews Grace And Frankie, possibly thanks to Miley Cyrus

Behold the power of Miley Cyrus: not long after the backyard-jamboree enthusiast professed her love for Netflix’s Grace And Frankie, the streaming service announced that it has renewed the comedy for a second season that will premiere in 2016. Co-creator Marta Kauffman thanked Cyrus and Netflix content chief Ted Sarandos during an interview at an FYC event in Los Angeles, which is probably the first time all three of those people have been mentioned in the same sentence. But maybe it won’t be the last—Cyrus could have a future ahead of her as a kind of litmus test for all new Netflix shows, or at least the Bill Murray ones.

To be fair, at least some of the credit should also go to stars Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin for their multidimensional portrayals of women of a certain age and changing marital status, and their co-stars Sam Waterston and Martin Sheen for steering clear of stereotypes as the men in their lives who are also the men in each other’s lives. The show, which is currently streaming its complete first season, has already taken on a life outside of Netflix; Frankie Bergstein is on Twitter, which means that Grace Hanson should be pinning things to vision boards soon enough, presumably while drinking some peyo-tea.
