Despite Neil Gaiman’s fall from grace via a series of damning sexual misconduct allegations, The Sandman shall dream on. Season two of the big-budget fantasy series about the Lord of Dreams and the Endless, his family of eternal elementals that make up the more fanciful parts of reality, is heading back to Netflix for season two. Though the series was long thought unfilmable, the series’ first season adapted the first two collections of Sandman books, Preludes And Nocturnes and The Doll’s House. Being that season two will also conclude Dream’s television run, it will adapt a slew of Sandman books, including Season of Mists, Brief Lives, The Kindly Ones, and The Sandman: Overture, as well as some one shots, like “The Song Of Orpheus” and “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”

Here’s the synopsis:

After a fateful reunion with his family, Dream of the Endless (Tom Sturridge) must face one impossible decision after another as he attempts to save himself, his kingdom, and the waking world from the epic fallout of his past misdeeds. To make amends, Dream must confront longtime friends and foes, gods, monsters, and mortals. But the path to forgiveness is full of unexpected twists and turns, and true absolution may cost Dream everything. Based on the beloved award-winning DC comic series, the second season of THE SANDMAN will tell Dream’s story arc in full to its thrilling conclusion.

We don’t totally know if the allegations against Gaiman, which the writer denies, ended the series prematurely, which is what happened to Good Omens and Anansi Boy. Showrunner Allan Heinberg announced the show’s end earlier this year, curiously saying that they were running out of dreams to share. We’re not totally buying that, but Gaiman’s association has put everyone involved with his fantasy empire in a very difficult position.

The Sandman series has always been focused exclusively on Dream’s story, and back in 2022, when we looked at the remaining Dream material from the comics, we knew we only had enough story for one more season,” showrunner Allan Heinberg wrote on X. “We are extremely grateful to Netflix for bringing the team all back together and giving us the time and resources to make a faithful adaptation in a way that we hope will surprise and delight the comics’ loyal readers as well as fans of our show.”

The first batch of Sandman episodes drops on July 3, Volume II arrives on July 24, and the special bonus episode on July 31.
