Nick Reiner pleads not guilty in deaths of Rob and Michele Singer Reiner

Nick Reiner appeared in court in Los Angeles today and pleaded not guilty in the deaths of his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner. After Rob and Michele were found dead in their home in December, Nick was charged with murder and has been in custody since. The New York Times reports that today’s proceeding took “only minutes” and that it would not be uncommon for the plea to be adjusted later.

A preliminary hearing has been set for April 29, though prosecutors warned it may take longer to sift through the evidence. Per the Times, the charges carry “special circumstances” which could add time to Reiner’s sentence upon conviction. He faces life in prison without parole or the death penalty if convicted.

Reiner was arrested and charged after Rob and Michele were found dead on December 14. Defense lawyer Alan Jackson was initially hired to represent Nick but suddenly removed himself from the case in January after a meeting with Judge Theresa McGonigle. Reiner has lived with serious mental illness for much of his life, with the Times reporting that he entered a yearlong mental health conservatorship in 2020 and has been diagnosed with both schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder. Reiner also lived with addiction issues, which became the subject of the film Being Charlie in 2015. Nick co-wrote the film, which his father directed.
