The dream of Back To The Future Part 2 lives on in Nike's new self-lacing basketball shoes

Nike has introduced yet another thing to take up real estate on your phone: The Nike Adapt BB, an app-controlled sneaker and the sportswear brand’s first self-lacing basketball shoe. Plans to release the Adapt BB were first announced in December of last year, and Nike debuted a teaser for the shoe just a day prior to the official announcement that featured a test group of pro basketball players:

The Nike Adapt BB will be the company’s second self-lacing shoe to be released to the general public; the HyperAdapt 1.0 was released back in 2016, a year too late to meet the Back To The Future Part II prediction. And the technology has already undergone some major upgrades; Nike Adapt app will now allow the wearer to continually update the FitAdapt shoe firmware (not a phrase we ever expected to say), making the shoe adjustable on the fly.

With the introduction of driverless taxis, rollable televisions, interactive movies, and shoes that lace themselves, our present is starting to look more and more like a “future” depicted in 80s sci-fi flicks—complete with global superpowers in political disarray.

In addition to its technological advancements, the Nike Adapt BB will reportedly carry a $350 price tag, a much lower cost than its $720 predecessor. Of course, Nike doesn’t plan to stop at the basketball court, adding in its announcement that “the next step will be to bring FitAdapt to other sports and lifestyle products, each with unique demands for fit in different environments.”
