Oprah will star in Ava DuVernay’s A Wrinkle In Time

Deadline is reporting that Oprah Winfrey will soon be reuniting with her old Selma director Ava DuVernay, with news that the retired talk show host has been cast as Mrs. Which in Disney’s upcoming A Wrinkle In Time. The oldest and leader of the trio of mysterious ladies that send Madeline L’Engle’s young protagonists on their tesseracting journeys through time and space, the indistinct but powerful Mrs. Which is usually described as a vague, shimmering light in the shape of an old woman.

Well, now she’ll be a shimmering light in the shape of Oprah (a pretty good deal, as far as shimmering light-life goes), offering up cryptic advice, and hopefully a not-too-literal interpretation of Mrs. Which’s distinctive speech patterns. (We don’t know if we could handle hearing Oprah tttttalkkk llllllikkkkke thisssssss for very long.) Winfrey’s casting is the first such announcement for the film, although DuVernay has said that she’s seeking diverse and minority performers for most of the parts, including, presumably, the main trio of Calvin O’Keefe and Meg and Charles Wallace Murry.

For her own part, Winfrey has been getting out and acting quite a bit, lately. She took on a recent supporting role on her OWN network’s Greenleaf, and will soon appear in Lee Daniels’ Richard Pryor biopic and the recently announced TV movie adaptation of The Immortal Life Of Henrietta Lacks.
