The BBC has given the go-ahead to a new sideways adaptation of a different Jane Austen classic: Persuasion.

There's another Other Bennet Sister on the way: ‌The Other Elliot Sister

Earlier this year, the British Broadcasting Company had a surprise hit with The Other Bennet Sister, an adaptation of Jane Austen’s Pride & Prejudice from the perspective of Mary (Ella Bruccoleri), the Jan Brady of literature’s Bennet bunch. Overlooked by Austen for her more beautiful and charismatic sisters, Mary provided the series with a unique point of view, one that couldn’t be carried into a second season. Faced with the challenge of continuing the series, which has since become BritBox’s biggest-ever hit, Bad Wolf founder Jane Tranter announced a follow-up, The Other Elliot Sister, at the 2026 Edinburgh TV Festival. Based on Austen’s Persuasion, The Other Elliot Sister aims to do for one of Anne’s sisters what Bennet Sister did for Mary.

Based on Janice Hadlow’s novel, The Other Bennet Sister follows the events of Austen’s novel from Mary’s eyes as well as her own search for love. Hadlow is currently working on the follow-up novel about the Elliots, which the BBC picked up the rights to. As Telly Visions noted, Persuasion doesn’t really have a clear analogue to Mary. Speaking to Jane Austen’s affinity for the names Elizabeth and Mary, Persuasion also follows three daughters, Anne, Elizabeth, and Mary, who are not to be confused with Pride & Prejudice‘s Elizabeth and Mary. In Persuasion, Elizabeth is the eldest and favorite daughter, while Mary is the nightmare baby of the family. However, the BBC has yet to announce which Elliot sister will be designated “The Other.”

The Other Bennet Sister wraps its run with a three-part Christmas special airing later this year.
