Connie Britton is pretending to be a teen's mom in unsettling Phony trailer

The trailer opens with Nivola’s Sonny declaring himself lucky and calling his mom, Ellen (Britton), his “favorite person,” as the two laugh and enjoy each other’s company at various moments. But Phony is not a happy-go-lucky series about a mother-son duo. Things take a darker turn after Sonny gets into a freak car accident and wakes up to a woman who isn’t his mom, but vaguely resembles her, in his hospital room (both women are played by Britton). Sonny tries to tell people he doesn’t know what happened to his mom, but he believes an imposter has taken her place. One of his friends suggests that this mystery sounds similar to the bizarre conspiracy theory that Avril Lavigne died and was replaced by a lookalike named Melissa. Others think Sonny is spiraling out of control after his near-death experience. But one moment, in which the imposter fails to reciprocate their secret code for “I love you,” convinces Sonny that his hunch is correct.
