Pocket Mortys break free in this exclusive look at the new Rick And Morty comic
Cartoon Network’s Rick And Morty has built up a fervent fanbase with its dark comedy and surprising emotional resonance, and it’s made a successful transition to the world of comics thanks to Oni Press. The main Rick And Morty comic book has captured the spirit of the TV series with stories that are imaginative, strange, and totally hilarious, and the spin-off miniseries expand on this world and show different facets of it. Rick And Morty is steadily growing beyond its TV origins, and the newest comic-book spin-off pulls inspiration from Rick And Morty: Pocket Mortys, a mobile game that riffs on the Pokémon concept with alternate universe versions of Morty that are forced to fight each other.
Written by Tini Howard with art by Marc Ellerby and colors by Katy Farina, next week’s Rick And Morty: Pocket Like You Stole It #1 has Morty trying to escape his captivity at the hands of his maniacal grandfather, who has collected a “zoobliette” of Mortys to fight for him. This exclusive preview opens with Morty and Mermaid Morty on the run, but a lack of food and water means they can’t survive for much longer. Howard does great work maintaining the distinct voices of the titular characters, and her story capitalizes on the mix of absurdity and sadism that is at the heart of most of the show’s humor.
Ellerby and Farina have extensive experience working on Rick And Morty comics, and Ellerby’s expressions and timing amplify the jokes in the script while Farina’s coloring creates an ominous atmosphere for the action. Readers can watch the fight unfold when Rick And Morty: Pocket Like You Stole It #1 goes on sale on July 5, and the Pocket Mortys game is available to download now for anyone that wants to be directly responsible for the Mortys’ suffering.
