A Practical Magic musical from Norah Jones is on the way

The film is also getting a long-awaited sequel this fall.

A Practical Magic musical from Norah Jones is on the way

Times are tough; there’s no budget for extravagant forms of magic. Luckily, there is plenty of Practical Magic to go around. Besides a sequel to the 1998 film hitting theaters this autumn, Deadline reports this morning that a musical adaptation of the film is in the works, with a score from Norah Jones and Gregg Wattenberg. This appears to be both musicians’ first stab at writing for the stage.

Alice Hoffman, who wrote the 1995 novel upon which the Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock-starring film is based, will write the book for the musical with Peter Duchan. “I’m so excited to be working with my amazing collaborators on bringing Practical Magic to the stage,” she told Deadline. “This story of love and sisterhood is meant for the theater. Music is the heart and soul of Practical Magic, you can hear it as you read the book, even though it isn’t there. Now you will finally hear the story as I always imagined it. You will hear magic.” Aside from the original Practical Magic, Hoffman has also written three prequels to the novel, all of which came out within the past decade: The Rules of Magic, Magic Lessons, and The Book of Magic.

Deadline doesn’t have any further information about casting or when we might see this thing on a stage quite yet. Perhaps coincidentally, Practical Magic isn’t the only musical adaptation of a 90s movie with a score from a pop star in the works; a 10 Things I Hate About You musical with a score from Carly Rae Jepsen and a book from Lena Dunham was reported to be in development last April. Like Practical Magic, that movie’s also got a decades-late sequel in the works.
