R.I.P. Microsoft Zune
The Zune has officially achieved transcendence from iPod also-ran to ironic kitsch object: Microsoft has announced that it will stop making new versions of its personal music and video player “because of tepid demand,” forever consigning the Zune to the Island Of Misfit Technologies where it can frolic with Betamax, LaserDisc, and the Neo Geo. The company does intend to continue supporting its current devices, but will primarily be focused on “the strength of the entire Zune ecosystem across Microsoft platforms” such as the Windows Phone 7 and Xbox 360, meaning all hope for future limited-run Zunes like the 2008 Joy Division edition is lost. On the plus side, even the regular ol’ Zunes are about to become totally cool and retro. And now, here is the obligatory picture of "Zune Tattoo Guy."
