Jamaican reggae singer Buju Banton—whose Before The Dawn took home the Grammy last week for best reggae album—has been found guilty of conspiring to buy and distribute cocaine. It was the second trial for Banton (real name Mark Myrie) after a jury deadlocked last year. Prosecutors once again presented a case based on recordings of Banton talking to a DEA informant in 2009 about brokering a large deal with two other men, including one video that showed him tasting cocaine in a warehouse. Banton was found guilty on charges of “conspiracy to possess with the intent to distribute cocaine, possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking offense and using the wires to facilitate a drug trafficking offense.” His attorney says he intends to appeal the verdict.
