RJ Mitte, the actor best known for playing Walter White Jr. on Breaking Bad, has died, according to TMZ. “It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of beloved actor, philanthropist and passionate disability rights advocate RJ Mitte,” his reps said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. TMZ reports that Mitte died by suicide and that the investigation into his death is ongoing. He was 34 years old.

For the entire run of Breaking Bad, Mitte started as Walt Jr. or “Flynn”, the son of Bryan Cranston’s Walter and Anna Gunn’s Skyler White, who lives with cerebral palsy. Mitte, who had cerebral palsy himself, appeared in 56 episodes of the series and earned a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series with his castmates in 2014 for the show’s final season. “Some of them (the fans) say ‘you inspire me’ in some way or another,” he told Independence Today in 2012, which highlighted his work with the Inclusion in the Arts and Media of Performers with Disabilities (IAMWD) campaign. “As time goes by, we’ll see more people with disabilities on TV. We’re working so that actors with disabilities will get auditions like everyone else.”

Born in Jackson, Mississippi, in 1992, Mitte was adopted by Roy Frank Mitte Jr. and Dyna Mitte a few weeks after his birth. He was diagnosed with cerebral palsy when he was about three years old. Though he spent much of his childhood in leg braces and on crutches, he eventually became strong enough to walk without them. He moved to Los Angeles in 2006, and later told Vice he started taking acting classes to meet kids his own age. In 2015, he told The Telegraph that he became financially responsible for his family when he was 13 after his parents separated and his mother became paralyzed after an accident.

An early professional role came in 2007, when he made an uncredited appearance in an episode of Hannah Montana. It wasn’t long after that that Mitte earned his role on Breaking Bad, which he later reflected “gave me more work than I could possibly imagine – I started filming it when I was 14 years old and I finished when I was turning 21.” In 2014, Mitte had a recurring role on the ABC Family show Switched At Birth, and appeared throughout the 2010s on shows like Vegas, Robot Chicken, and Now Apocalypse. He also appeared in films like Dixieland, Time Share, and Triumph. His final series regular role came in The Guardians Of Justice in 2022.

Mitte got engaged to Kennedy Suarez on October 10, 2025, according to People. She survives him.
