Robert Pattinson wants to keep playing Batman as long as he can, if that's quite all right

Robert Pattinson would very much like to keep playing Batman as long as he can, if that’s all right with everyone. In the BAFTA video series “Roll Play,” where an actor rolls an oversized novelty die with pictures from six previous roles and discusses whichever role comes up, Pattinson talked about his time on The Batman and what fans can expect from its keenly-anticipated sequel. After revving up his role by shutting his eyes and humming to himself, presumably tapping into that private weirdo equilibrium that makes watching Robert Pattinson so dang fascinating, the actor let the die fly so enthusiastically that it flung from the table. Yet Pattinson’s chaos magic couldn’t deflect the press’ hunger for an update on The Batman: Part II, now back on track with Steven Soderbergh on board to help director Matt Reeves finish filming as Reeves steps away to handle a family matter. Right off the bat (!), the die was cast: Pattinson would talk Batman first.

“It’s a kind of universally acknowledged fact that [Batman] is the coolest superhero by a million miles. If I was to do a superhero movie, I want to do that one,” Pattinson said, reflecting on his interest in taking on the role. “I just started getting into my head years ago… I just feel, I don’t know why, but something kind of tinkling, and I was like, ‘There’s something there.'” Pattinson went on to say he later found out that Reeves had his performance in the Safdie Brothers’ 2017 crime drama Good Time in mind while working on the script for The Batman. “I had no idea he was thinking, like, ‘There’s something to this vibe.’ When I first read the script, I was just thinking, ‘Oh, there’s something so immediately inspiring about it.’ Batman’s been reinvented so many times, and [The Batman is] such an unusual reinvention, just in terms of the atmosphere of the movie. I really connected to it. It’s just been one of those unbelievable experiences to shoot it, and I just want to keep doing it for as long as I can.”

As for what vibey elements Reeves has cooked up for Pattinson’s next turn as the raccoon-eyed, blueberry-munching, Cobain-emulating, gearhead-night-squirrel version of the Dark Knight, Pattinson kept his response short. “Still some ways to go, and the new script is… it’s just amazing,” he said. “[The Batman: Part II is] just an understanding of Bruce Wayne and Batman’s psychology in a way that I don’t think has been seen before,” he said. “You know, when there’s been hundreds and thousands of comics and so many different interpretations of the same character, it’s like… it feels enormous, but really unusual, and unusual in a different way to the first one.”
