In this world nothing can be said to be certain except death, taxes, and the inevitable public domain horror movie about beloved children’s characters. We knew the “Steamboat Willie” flick was coming (it premieres in theaters April 2), and now the Screamboat trailer has arrived. The overgrown proto-Mickey Mouse is played by none other than David Howard Thornton, who portrays Art the Clown in the Terrifier films. But he’s also a children’s-character-horror veteran, having previously portrayed an evil Grinch in the unlicensed parody The Mean One.
“I’ve been to two of the screenings so far, and the audience reactions have been fantastic. They’ve really gotten what we’re trying to do,” the actor told IndieWire regarding Screamboat. “I like to call it ‘splat-stick’ comedy because it’s just an absurd concept when you think about it. I mean, it’s a mutant mouse going around on a boat killing people.”
The Screamboat trailer invites fans for a cursed ride on the Staten Island Ferry, where lots of blood and gore await. According to the film’s synopsis (via Variety), Screamboat “follows a group of New Yorkers on a late-night ferry ride that turns deadly when a mischievous mouse begins a rampage, targeting unsuspecting passengers. The unlikely crew must band together to thwart the murderous menace before their relaxing commute turns into a nightmare.”
“I’m so excited to share our mischievous monster mouse with the world. Screamboat is my way of paying homage to Disney while putting a sinister, yet comedic twist on the classic,” writer-director Steven LaMorte previously said in a statement (via Variety). “Watching David Howard Thornton bring Steamboat Willie to life with the magicians at Quantum Creation FX has been nothing short of amazing—he’s hilarious and murderously entertaining. I can’t wait for audiences to meet Willie and experience the chaos we’ve created.”
