Shane Gillis f-bombs, bombs

The once-fired Saturday Night Live comic let loose with an accidental curse word during a Dr. Seuss sketch on Saturday.

Shane Gillis f-bombs, bombs

Shane Gillis just can’t stop breaking Saturday Night Live records. As SNL historians know, the right-leaning stand-up was memorably and rightly fired from his place as featured player in 2019 (for repeated podcast bigotry) before even taking the Studio 8H stage. And last night, where producer Lorne Michaels inexplicably insisted on bringing Gillis back to host the show for the third time, Gillis joined the slightly less rarified ranks of those who’ve dropped the word “fuck” on live TV. (The sketch hides the YouTube version with some audio trickery.)

Gillis, who was in the midst of indifferently playing some sort of half-assed Dr. Seuss creature in a Green Eggs and Ham sketch, responded to his Seuss-ified father Mikey Day with a mumbled but very audible “fuckin,'” causing the comic to turn his head away and stammer like you do when you just broke the show’s number one taboo. Day, pro that he is, yet called out the slip-up at the end of the sketch when his character—in addition to succumbing to Andrew Dismukes’ pushy pitch for green spoiled-looking breakfast foods—kicked his son out of the house with a booming, “And you said a bad word!” added to his litany of complaints.

Gillis, though he muddled through another sub-par hosting performance, is hardly the first SNL host or cast member to break the f-barrier on air. The late Charles Rocket memorably got fired after asking “Who the fuck did it” in a Dallas-inspired sketch in 1981, while Samuel L. Jackson dropped one of his trademark “fuck”s during a 2012 “What’s Up With That?” sketch. Host Kristen Stewart lost control of one in her 2017 monologue, while other notable F-bombers include the likes of Jenny Slate, Paul Shaffer, Norm MacDonald, and Sam Rockwell. And don’t get us started on those filthy, filthy musical guests. So welcome to the fuckin’ party, Shane.
