In Stick's season 2 trailer, Owen Wilson's failed golfer takes a big swing on himself

In the season two trailer for feel-good sports underdog series Stick, Owen Wilson’s past-his-prime golfer finally decides to gamble on himself. (Not actual gambling on sports, as that’s the plot of The Fall And Rise Of Reggie Dinkins.) No, after successfully mentoring young golf prodigy Santi (Peter Dager) in the show’s amiably sub-par first season, Wilson’s former pro golfer Pryce Cahill is convinced by former rival Clark Ross (Timothy Olyphant) to try to become “the oldest player to win the U.S. Open.”

Naturally, the creaky former wunderkind needs some help (apart from loyal caddy Marc Maron) to get his swing back, with new series regular Rhea Seahorn taking time off from saving the world from an insidious hive mind to shake off some of Cahill’s rust. As Wilson’s onetime golf phenom says of his abruptly derailed career, “I read the [internet] comments once, and it said, ‘Pryce Cahill is the Amelia Earhart of golf—he took off with great expectations then suddenly disappeared over a water hazard.'”

With the same blend of sports shenanigans and what The A.V. Club‘s Brian Tallerico called Apple TV+’s signature brand of “middle-aged guys overcoming life’s trauma to be better versions of themselves” sentimentality, Stick looks to ace the sort of comfortable dad uplift the streamer’s Ted Lasso and Shrinking have been delivering.

Stick‘s second season premieres on Apple TV+ on November 4.
