AI, the inevitable future of entertainment, reportedly deletes upcoming season of Sweden's The Challenge

Good news, Hollywood: You no longer have to blame lost Nicolas Cage movies on theft. AI will do the dirty work for you. The Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet (via Futurism) reports an AI agent deleted the entire upcoming season of the Swedish version of the MTV reality competition The Challenge, called The Challenge Sverige, before its November 22 premiere. According to the report, there is no hope of recovering the files, forcing editors to redo their hard work from scratch. This is hardly surprising. Studies show that AI, which is heralded as a time-saver, creates more work, not less. Still, one would hope that the technology that studios are so bullish on wouldn’t delete a finished product. Nevertheless, Aftonbladet‘s sources say the deletion happened after Challenge Sverige‘s production company, Mastiff, uploaded an AI agent to its servers.

TV4, the channel that airs The Challenge Sverige, tells a different story and says it hadn’t heard that AI was the culprit. Program director Mia Lindqvist denied that an AI agent “acted independently” and blamed the disaster on a “technological breakdown.” She continues, “Most production companies use AI in their work processes these days, but that’s a completely different matter.”

“They have to recut everything from scratch. The raw material exists, so there is no problem, but of course it means that we lose time.”

At least host Ahed Behran got a good laugh out of it. “Is it true?” he told the paper. “I knew AI would be the death of me, this is just the beginning.”
