This post discusses plot elements of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’s second season.

When The CW’s Crazy Ex-Girlfriend returned for season two last fall, there was a change in Rebecca Bunch’s demeanor, relationship status, and weekly introduction-via-song. Out with the animation and the “it’s a lot more nuanced than that”; in with a vintage studio-musical vibe and a punchline in which co-creator and star Rachel Bloom’s face bursts through that of co-star Vincent Rodriguez III, recalling The Shining’s “Here’s Johnny!” moment in all its humor and horror. The show will also switch things up again for season three, with a new intro directed by Joseph Kahn, the prolific director behind videos for Britney Spears’ “Toxic,” Taylor Swift’s “Bad Blood,” and, most importantly, the gravity-defying clip that pushed Sisqó’s “Thong Song” into the collective consciousness back in 1999.

That item on Kahn’s résumé was underlined during Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’s panel at the Television Critics Association press tour today, where Bloom, co-creator Aline Brosh McKenna, and cast previewed their upcoming third season, which picked up a potential tagline when Bloom described it as “funny Fatal Attraction.” Along with Kahn’s involvement—he’ll also direct the season’s fourth episode, so maybe there’ll be an ode to a particular type of underwear in that one—it was revealed that Rebecca’s campaign of revenge against runaway groom Josh Chan will begin with a Disney-style ensemble number. But will it also feature Rebecca floating over the outstretched hands of an MTV Beach House’s worth of bathing-suit-clad extras? You’ll have to wait until October 13 to see.
