The evening gloves are off in new trailer for The Gilded Age season 4

Status, desire, and power continue to inform HBO’s sumptuous costume drama The Gilded Age, and as we see in this new trailer for its upcoming fourth season, fiction continues to collide with history. Behold: John D. Rockefeller (Neal Huff) is making snarling railroad magnate George Russell (Morgan Spector) sweat—enough that George almost seems open to an invitation home from his estranged wife, Bertha (Carrie Coon). An impending visit from President Grover Cleveland (Jim Gaffigan) is getting Agnes van Rhijn (Christine Baranski) all in a lather, prompting Ada (Cynthia Nixon) to start pinching pennies ahead of her sister’s planned extravagances. Indeed, the table is set for a new, knotty season of this Emmy-nominated confection, and the official logline presents it thus:

“Bertha Russell changed Society at a cost. Now, her family must reckon with the consequences as Agnes van Rhijn seizes an opportunity to regain her position. Meanwhile, Marian forges a new path for herself, and Peggy works to be accepted by her future in-laws. In this new era, you must be careful what you wish for.”

And speaking of Marian Brook (Louisa Jacobson), while her relationship with Larry Russell (Harry Richardson) seems to have found terra firma after a rocky season three, Ada seems concerned that Marian isn’t finding time for herself. “What if this is my life? What I’m meant to do?” Marian says, as we see her tending dutifully to children and mending wounds. While it appears Marian’s finding her footing, Peggy Scott (Denée Benton) seems on the back foot, seeking acceptance within the family of her new fiancé, Dr. William Kirkland (Jordan Donica). With themes of control certain to reassert themselves this season, at least one character is seizing destiny by the lapels. “This situation requires me to take a leave of my manners!” Agnes declares as she struts through a foyer. Ooh, the evening gloves are off!
