The Godzilla sequel will be a regular monster mash

Production officially began yesterday on the Godzilla sequel directed by Krampus and Trick ‘R’Treat’s Michael Dougherty, and according to a press release from Warner Bros., it looks like the studio has scrapped its initial title of Godzilla: King Of Monsters, at least during the course of production. That’s mildly interesting, sure, but the real juicy tidbit comes with the new official synopsis for the film, which confirms that it will be a monster mash of graveyard smash proportions:

The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species—thought to be mere myths—rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.

That’s similar to the plot of 1968’s Destroy All Monsters—give or take an alien race bent on establishing a stronghold underneath Mt. Fuji so they can destroy humankind—as well as the first time Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah will appear in Legendary’s newly dubbed MonsterVerse. The human cast of the film is similarly stacked, including Vera Farmiga, Ken Watanabe, Sally Hawkins, Kyle Chandler, Millie Bobby Brown, Bradley Whitford, Thomas Middleditch, Charles Dance, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Aisha Hinds, and Zhang Ziyi.

Godzilla: King Of Monsters, or whatever it ends up being called, is due out in March 2019.
