The Mindy Project returns after… a lengthy hospital stay?
Here’s what’s up in the world of television for April 1. All times are Eastern
TOP PICK
The Mindy Project (Fox, 9 p.m.): After working toward a major romantic turning point, The Mindy Project was benched by Fox for more than two months. The real true cause of this hiatus was a bit of schedule shuffling—bringing Glee back to Tuesdays, completing the first seasons of Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Dads—though the promo art available from the network has What’s On Tonight believing that Drs. Lahiri and Castellano have been in the hospital this whole time. How could they not let us know? Gwen Ihnat feels especially bad about it—she would’ve sent some flowers or something if the show just came out and told her it was in the hospital!
ALSO NOTED
Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. (ABC, 8 p.m.): Here… comes… Deathlok! The cyborg emerges in full cyborg form to test Oliver Sava’s “Agents is better when there’s a superhero around” theory.
Cougar Town (TBS, 10 p.m.): The cul-de-sac crew ends the season the same as it began—with its future at TV Club in question. Of course, TBS has yet to renew the show for a sixth season, so Les Chappell thinks this is the right time to give the Community companion its very own “six seasons and a movie” campaign.
Inside Amy Schumer (Comedy Central, 10:30 p.m.): This sketch series was one of 2013’s most satisfying comedy experiences—an open-ended invitation to innuendo that the show’s eponymous star just might twist into a damning critique of such innuendo. We’ll have Kate Knibbs keeping track of the show’s progress as it enters its sophomore season.
REGULAR COVERAGE
Glee (Fox, 8 p.m.)
Trophy Wife (ABC, 9:30 p.m.)
Person Of Interest (CBS, 10 p.m.)
Justified (FX, 10 p.m.)
TV CLUB CLASSIC
The Office (Classic): It’s a pretty big day for returns: TV Club Classic continues its full-scale resurrection with the third season of the U.S. Office, examining a pair of episodes viewers waited for with bated breath in the fall of 2006. Erik Adams looks back fondly on a time when Andy Bernard wasn’t the enemy of all things funny.
WHAT ELSE IS ON
Twisted (ABC Family, 9 p.m.): ABC Family’s wacky definition of the TV season sees this thriller wrapping up its freshman year a literal year (and then some) after its premiere. And yet there was no room for a second season of Bunheads (one that presumably would’ve played out for the entire calendar years of 2014 and 2015, with a finale trickling into 2013.)
Clash Of The Ozarks (Discovery, 10 p.m.): The finale episode of this unscripted series is titled “Justified,” but What’s On Tonight can’t quite figure out what other, popular show it’s supposed to be riffing off of. Rural setting, feuding factions… it’s The Dukes Of Hazzard, right?
Off The Bat From The MLB Fan Cave (MTV2, 11 p.m.): Featuring noted baseball experts Sway and Fat Joe, the latter of whom at least has a history of being photographed in various Yankees caps.
ELSEWHERE IN TV CLUB
So Ted finally met the mother. Did you see it? And read both of Donna Bowman’s excellent takes on the series’ end? Then perhaps you’re interested in reading Todd VanDerWerff’s take on the last season of How I Met Your Mother. And after all of that careful consideration, maybe you’d like to cleanse your palate with some intoxicants and gross-out animation—in which case Erik Adams can only recommend certain parts of Comedy Central’s TripTank.
NEW ON HOME VIDEO
It’s classic sitcoms at a budget price: The first two seasons of NewsRadio have been packaged together (giving you a decent excuse to sop up your HIMYM tears by re-reading Donna Bowman’s TV Club Classic reviews of the show), while Mary Tyler Moore’s finest work as Laura Petrie sees release as The Dick Van Dyke Show: Classic Mary Tyler Moore Episodes. The latter is not to be confused with The Mary Tyler Moore Show: Classic Dick Van Dyke Episodes, which is not a thing that exists.
