The team’s coming together in the new Voltron: Legendary Defender trailer
Our first peek at Netflix and DreamWorks Animation’s upcoming Voltron: Legendary Defender series came last month with a short but promising teaser. It offered a decent idea of the reverent anime aesthetics that showrunners Joaquim Dos Santos and Lauren Montgomery (Nickelodeon’s The Legend Of Korra) were going for, but there was little sense of tone. But this newly released trailer hints that the show will offer fun and wonder in equal measures.
Most of the minute-and-a-half-long clip appears to come from the reboot’s introductory episode, as five precocious teens from an Earth-based space exploration program stumble upon one of Voltron’s iconic robotic lions. The giant metallic cat transports them across the cosmos to a castle where a very shiny lady informs them that they must pilot the titular five-piece mecha warrior in order to protect the universe from evil. It’s basic escapist fantasy, but the execution seems solid enough. Steven Yeun (The Walking Dead), Rhys Darby (Flight Of The Conchords), and Tyler Labine (Tucker And Dale Vs. Evil) are among the actors offering their vocal talents.
All episodes of Voltron: Legendary Defender will come together to form a complete season on Netflix June 10.
