What is going on with the security in retirement homes lately! Guards must be sleeping on the job, because Netflix is debuting its second title about retirees-turned-detectives in less than a year. At least this lapse in oversight is the audience’s gain. Last November, the first season of A Man On The Inside introduced us to yet another delightful Michael Schur-directed Ted Danson character, and now, we’re getting a whole host of beloved thespians in the star-studded Thursday Murder Club.
Directed by Home Alone and the Harry Potter franchise’s Chris Columbus and co-produced by Amblin, The Thursday Murder Club stars Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Ben Kingsley, Celia Imrie, Naomi Ackie, Daniel Mays, Henry Lloyd-Hughes, Tom Ellis, Jonathan Pryce, David Tennant, Paul Freeman, Geoff Bell, Richard E. Grant, and Ingrid Oliver. We weren’t exaggerating when we said this thing was star-studded. In fact, they’re the “finest cast [Columbus has] worked with since Potter,” as he told Tudum. Sorry to the casts of Pixels, I Love You, Beth Cooper, and The Christmas Chronicles 2, but they can take that up with the director. In the meantime, the club has a murder to solve.
The Thursday Murder Club follows “four irrepressible retirees – Elizabeth (Mirren), Ron (Brosnan), Ibrahim (Kingsley) and Joyce (Imrie) – who spend their time solving cold case murders for fun. When an unexplained death occurs on their own doorstep, their casual sleuthing takes a thrilling turn as they find themselves with a real whodunit on their hands,” per the film’s synopsis. That description might remind you of Only Murders In The Building, yet another project featuring septuagenarian detectives, but the inspiration for The Thursday Murder Club predates the Hulu series by a year. The upcoming film is based on Richard Osman’s 2020 novel of the same name.
